This course is carried out over three days: September 16, October 14 and November 18.
Members of Planning Commissions and Boards of Zoning Appeals are often called upon to make important decisions that affect a community’s physical, social and economic development. The issues they address and the tools and techniques at their disposal to guide growth and development are becoming increasingly complex. The objective of Training for Planning Officials is to equip citizen planners and community leaders with the technical knowledge and leadership skills necessary to successfully plan vibrant communities.
This course consists of three parts. Part I introduces you to the foundations of planning in the State of Georgia, specifically the Atlanta region. This includes a historical basis of land use planning and regulation and an overview of the legal environment in which planning is conducted. Part II reviews the most practical tools of planning from the local, state, regional and specific-issue perspectives. In addition to honing your leadership skills, Part III focuses on bringing theory to practice and teaches participants how to put principles learned in other sessions to work in their community.
